Michael W. Case graduated from California State University, Fresno, in 1968 (student body president)
and received his law degree from Hastings College of Law, University of California, in 1971. Admitted
to practice law in California since 1972, he specializes in civil litigation, business, and real
estate.
In 2001, he completed his term as one of four lawyers serving on the 21-member California Judicial
Council. The Council, chaired by the Chief Justice of California, is constitutionally charged with
oversight of the State's trial and appellate courts, including funding, policy, and adoption of
court rules.
Mr. Case is a past chair and founder of the Real Property Section, present chair and founder of
the Ethics and Professional Responsibility Committee, and a former president of the Ventura County
Bar Association.
Mr. Case previously served as a member of the Board of Governors of the California State Bar and in
1996 was its vice president. In 1997, he was appointed by the Chief Justice to the California
Judicial Council's Task Force on Complex Civil Litigation, formed to recommend new ways of managing
complex litigation in our trial courts. The task force completed its work in 1999 and its
recommendations have been adopted.
Earlier in his career, he served as a deputy district attorney, adjunct law professor, and a United
States Air Force JAG Officer (Captain) where he served as a military prosecutor, followed by two
years as one of only ten circuit defense counsel, selected worldwide, to represent defendants in
general court-martials.
He is a frequent speaker and writer on law-related issues and is a member of various legal societies
and organizations, including the American Bar Association. He is a past member of the Ventura County
Inns of Court, with the rank of master, and a current member of the American Inns of Court and the
Ventura County Trial Lawyers Association. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the California
State Bar Foundation and a Foundation Fellow.
Mr. Case is an active participant in community and charitable affairs and has served in a variety
of leadership positions. In 2000, he was the democratic nominee for election to Congress from
California's 23rd Congressional District.
